Mission and History of CMN
The Chamber Music Network of Greater Cincinnati is a collaboration of Greater Cincinnati chamber music presenters, performers, and supporters united to increase awareness of and appreciation for chamber music in our community.
CMN was initiated in February 2005 by the Linton Series’ then-artistic director Richard Waller, and then-president of Chamber Music Cincinnati JoAnne Warren who convened a series of meetings of the region’s many and varied music series presenters and performers to discuss ways to collaborate and cooperate.
By the summer of 2006, the group had formalized its membership application process, instituted membership dues, and elected leadership. Since then CMN has incorporated in the State of Ohio, attained 501(c)(3) status, and embarked on several projects to support its mission.
Current institutional members are the Blue Ash/Montgomery Symphony Orchestra; Chamber Music Cincinnati; Christ Church Cathedral; Cincinnati Chamber Orchestra; Cincinnati String Project; Classical Revolution Cincinnati; concert:nova; Linton Music Series; Matinée Musicale Cincinnati; Saint B @ 3; Slavic Voices; and the Winstead Chamber Music Series.
Chamber music has traditionally been seen as classical music written for small ensembles, one musician to a part, usually performed without a conductor. However, modern sensibilities have expanded that definition to include a wide variety of instrumental and vocal combinations, musical styles, and contextual settings, including ancient music, jazz, world, and other acoustic ensembles.
Ideally, chamber music is performed in a small venue with little separation between the musicians and audience, allowing for an intimate experience and direct communication among all participants.
